Exophiala jeanmelsei is troublesome mold, causing product quality problem in beverage industry. In industry field, Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) media is usually used to detect the presence of mold, including Exophiala jeanmelsei. However, PDA does not support the growth of this particular mold. Therefore, using PDA, it is very hard to detect Exophiala jeanmelsei.

 

Sabouraud Destrose Agar (SDA) media or MicroBio PDA support the growth of Exophiala jeanmelsei so that those agar media should be used for mold detection. If MicroBio µ3D with the media is used, rapid mold detection is achieved and automated. The combination of the system and the media also works well for membrane filter method to detect mold.

 

The performance of Exophiala jeanmelsei detection of PDA, GPLP and SDA is shown below.

As the above test results show, Sabouraud Agar media is very effective to detect Exophiala jeanmelsei and pure PDA lacks of main composition to support the growth of Exophiala jeanmelsei.
